Hot tubs are fun! They are fun for friends and family, but does that include children? Within reason, yes it can. Kids can certainly have fun with their families, if a few precautions are taken. Keep an eye open for temperature and water safety and enjoy!

Children can overheat faster than adults, so it is important to monitor the temperature of the hot tub and the condition of the children while it is in use. The Center for Disease Control holds that it’s best for children under five to avoid hot tubs altogether. As enjoyable as hot tubs, spas, and jacuzzis can be, there are some safety tips to put in place first. Children must be tall enough to stand flat on the bottom with the head fully above the water, and they should be taught how to get safely out of the tub on their own.

Keep the temperature below 104 degrees, even as low as 98 degrees when all ages plan to be in the water. Extended stays in high temperatures can cause overheating, with symptoms that include hyperthermia, drowsiness, heat stroke, and even death. It’s a good idea to keep the time limit to 20 minutes or less at a time. Children as well as adults should drink lots of water before, during, and after time in the hot tub. It’s a great idea to consult the children’s regular doctor before allowing them to use your hot tub, a friend’s, or even the grandparent’s.

With an eagle eye the kids’ temperature, hydration, and water safety, make sure all drains are covered and not strong enough to drag or hold a smaller child underneath the water. Take care with the drain, and make sure it has a good cover on it.

Test strips to check the water before entering to ensure it is healthy and balanced. If bacteria is present, children’s immune systems may be more prone to such things as ear infections. It’s especially important that they do not submerge their heads below the water, and in fact, it’s a good idea to keep a large part of their upper bodies out of the water.

Following just a few common sense guidelines will ensure the whole family can enjoy the hot tub together, anytime!
